Leading Effectively: The Role of the African CEO

Today’s business landscape is very dynamic and interconnected thus needs an effective leader uniquely attuned to the economic currents and market shifts that could either advance or undermine their organisation’s long-term sustainability.

Integrity. A leader with integrity draws on their values to guide their decisions, behavior, and dealings with others. A leader with integrity has clear convictions about what is right and wrong and are respected for being genuine, principled, ethical, and consistent.

Effective Communication. Communication involves more than just listening attentively to others and responding appropriately. A good leader must have the ability to communicate concisely, and tactfully to his/her employees.

Leading by Example. As a leader, the best way to lead is by showing others the way; build credibility among your employees is to set the right example. You need to shoe through actions the behaviour that you want people to follow. By aligning your words and actions you will be able to build trust and make your team more willing to follow your example.

Recognise and Commend Success. Appreciating your employees goes a long way in boosting their morale. As a leader, ensure you constantly find ways to recognise your employees’ achievements. For people to stretch themselves and contribute their best efforts, they need to know their work will be valued and appreciated.

Empower Others. Great leaders understand that for people to give their best, they must have a sense of ownership over their work and believe that what they’re doing is meaningful. Communicate clear goals and deadlines to your team, and then give them the autonomy and authority to decide how the work gets done. Challenge them with high expectations and encourage them to be creative and show innovation.
